• EMMA Saunders writes: 'Are you able to spare some time over the next few weeks to help us continue our success in Richmond Park and North Kingston? On Saturday we are in North Richmond at Celia Hodge's house (11 Larkfield Road) between 10 am and 5 pm; James Bertin is in charge on the day and as always there is delivery and canvassing available. On Sunday we're in Coombe Vale and Coombe Hill at Julie Haines' house (10 Salisbury Road, New Malden, KT3 2HZ) from 11 to 5; James Lillis is running the day.

• Advance notice - we will have a big clerical job on Easter weekend (2nd to 5th April) at the office 42 Upper Richmond Road West. On this weekend we will be stuffing 1,000s of envelopes for the election freepost - and we need lots of people to keep that weekend free to come in and help. Please do put it in your diary now
|
• Telephone Canvassing: For those who are not able to door knock, we have six phone lines available for telephone canvassing in the office. We provide full training and scripts.
|
• Clerical Work: Finally, just a quick reminder that the office is now open Monday to Friday from 10 am onwards for clerical work - at the moment we are working on blue letters but also have some envelope stuffing. Please do come along for a warm welcome. I hope to see you at some point over the weekend if not before.

Sat 20th Mar 2010
• [Mar 08] Vince Cable: WE need to rethink our approach to banking. Successive Labour and Conservative Governments have left Britain vulnerable to an over-inflated financial services sector, where institutions became too big to fail. On a UK level - where British banks are 4.5 times bigger in terms of their liabilities than the country's economy - this is bad enough. But in Scotland, this has been still more pronounced. At the time they got into trouble, RBS' and HBOS' liabilities were 25 times the size of Scotland's economy.

• [Mar 18] Edward Davey (Kingston & Surbiton, Liberal Democrat): MAY I begin by joining other Members in praising our security and intelligence services? As somebody who has raised concerns over the Binyam Mohamed case and other allegations of complicity in torture, I want to put firmly on the record my party's support, and also my personal support, for the fantastic work our security services do - whether at GCHQ in examining the vast amount of electronic and other data that have to be analysed, at the Security Service or the Secret Intelligence Service, or through other elements of the intelligence machinery.

• [Mar 17] Lynne Featherstone (Hornsey & Wood Green, Liberal Democrat): ' . . LONDON is a world city, but its health care is not world class. It faces extreme health challenges, with the highest rates of child poverty, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. It has 40 per cent. of the UK's tuberculosis cases and 52 per cent. of its HIV cases, the highest number of dependent drug users, and the highest rates of teenage pregnancies. Sadly, London tops the list in many other areas as well.'

• [Mar 16] Vincent Cable: ' . . ANY one of those delays could be excused and explained, but the cumulative effect of the Treasury foot - dragging is great ill - will and is the reason why Members on both sides of the House keep returning to this issue. It is also why the 1 million people affected by this issue are so frustrated.'

Sat 20th Mar 2010
• [Mar 16] Vincent Cable: IS the Minister not mildly embarrassed that the Government claimed to be leading the international debate on recovery from the financial crisis but have now been chastised by the European Commission for a lack of clarity in their plans for tackling the fiscal deficit? Although the Government have been clear about when to make cuts and how rapidly to do so, they have been massively unclear about what they propose to cut - when are we going to hear that?

Sun 14th Mar 2010
• [14 Mar] Nick Clegg: 'SHALL I tell you the one phrase that bothers me more than any other? It's this. "That's just the way things are". No. The way things are is not the way they have to be. We do not have to live in a country where the poorest pay the biggest chunk of their income in tax. We do not have to live in a country where politics is the plaything of wealthy donors and corrupt MPs. We do not have to live in a country where the banks can profiteer at the expense of everybody else and our climate is in jeopardy. We do not have to live in a country where children's chances are determined more by their parents' background than by their own hopes and dreams. There is a better way.

• [Mar 13]: I HAVE a very simple message. We, the Liberal Democrats, were right about the financial crisis. We warned of the dangers and we led the debate when the crisis came. And now we have a clear vision for the future of the British economy. The Queen is said to have asked why no one warned about the crisis in the banking system. Actually, we did.

• [Mar 11] Lynne Featherstone (Hornsey & Wood Green, Liberal Democrat): ' . . MY right hon. Friend the leader of the Liberal Democrats has said that my party expects to increase the number of women in this House after the election. Should that fail to be the case, he has said that he will consider an appropriate mechanism, because there does come a point when one will be needed.

Sat 13th Mar 2010
• [Mar 09] . . Susan Kramer : I PARTICULARLY appreciate this opportunity to speak in the debate in defence of my local hospital, Kingston hospital. I am joined in my campaign by my hon. Friend Mr. Davey. We first learned of the risk to the hospital's A&E and maternity departments towards the end of last year. We told NHS officials that we thought the plans were outrageous. Kingston's maternity department deals with nearly 6,000 births a year, and the A and E unit treats more than 100,000 patients a year. It is therefore busier than almost any other hospital that has been mentioned. We agreed that we would hold back from going public with our campaign until the documents had been published. However, we were told in January that the documents would be withheld until after the general election, so we went public with our campaign anyway.

• . . Evan Harris (Oxford West & Abingdon, Liberal Democrat): ON a point of order, Mr. Speaker. I am glad that the Leader of the House is in her place-or nearly in her place-for this point of order. Last Thursday, historically, the House agreed without a Division to set up a Back-Bench Business Committee in time for the start of the next Parliament. Will you confirm, Mr. Speaker, that the only way that can be done is if a Standing Order is passed in this Parliament to do that job?
