Guide Dogs for the Blind Lobby MP over Fireworks Bill12.00.00am GMT Wed 19th Feb 2003 MP Vincent Cable will speak in parliament next Friday (28 February) in support of a new Bill to restrict the noise levels, sale and use of fireworks. This Private Members Bill is strongly supported by Guide Dogs for the Blind since the irresponsible use of fireworks causes great distress to guide dogs (as well as other dogs) and many have to be sedated or in some cases retired because of the trauma. Its local spokesperson is blind computer/IT entrepreneur Dr Julia Schofield. Vincent Cable said: "I have had a very large post bag on the issue of fireworks." "No sensible person wants to stop children enjoying safe fireworks on Bonfire Night or the carefully managed spectaculars at Kneller Hall and Marble Hill concerts." "But very loud and often dangerous fireworks are being used throughout the year and late into the night." "Greater discipline over sale and use is called for and I support the Private Members Bill." "It is of particular concern to pet owners and especially the blind for whom dogs are often essential".
