US/UK CANNOT PROVIDE ENOUGH HUMANITARIAN AID ALONE - TONGE

11.33.00am GMT Wed 26th Mar 2003

Jenny Tonge MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, commenting on Clare Short's announcement that Britain will give an extra £30 million in humanitarian aid to Iraq, said:

"Britain's contribution is welcome, but the US and the UK cannot provide the required relief alone. The best way to help the people of Iraq is for the Prime Minister to secure agreement at the UN for an international aid effort in Iraq."

"Awarding contracts to US companies for the management and distribution of humanitarian relief sends the wrong message. Other countries will be reluctant to share the burden if the UN does not take a lead."
