MP Speaks up for Adult Education, despite Hampton cuts

MP Vincent Cable secured a debate in parliament last week to debate the funding difficulties of adult, and further education generally.

The popular and successful Adult College has recently been attacked for withdrawing classes from the Hampton Craft School, leading to its closure, and the Greenwood Centre (but it has extended Hampton courses in Hampton Community College, Hampton School and Hampton Hill Library).

Vincent Cable said: "We have two of the most successful and best further education colleges in the country. But despite government promises of lots more money, it isn't arriving at the 'frontline'. Costs are rising - salaries (and staff are seriously underpaid) National Insurance and pensions - out pacing revenue. "

"The Adult College is still struggling with cuts in its council funding and government funding does not match increased costs. That is why economies are being made".

"I have argued in parliament that the government is being seriously complacent about the FE funding position. I have raised with the college principal the concern of people in Hampton over the loss of the School of Needlework - but other courses are being offered in the Hampton area".
