Abandoned Car Problem Grows5.04.09pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 29th Sep 2003
Latest figures obtained by Vincent Cable MP show that this year there will be around 3,000 vehicles abandoned in the borough of which the council will remove only 30% (900) - these figures exclude the 650 surrendered to the council. Vincent Cable MP has been pursuing the complaints about the case of a local resident who went to live in Hampshire leaving behind a Porsche car and a boat on a trailer on the road way in an area in Twickenham where there is a serious parking problem (Andover Road and Mereway). Vincent Cable MP said that the council "has undoubtedly improved its system of dealing with abandoned cars and now has a computer link with DVLA in Swansea which is a welcome change. But it is still having to disregard 70% of cars which are blocking highways". "The government also has to take responsibility for this problem as the new regulations on recycling impose burdens and disincentives on the last owner".
