London Mayor Must Stop Buck Passing And Take Up His Responsibility For The Tube - Hughes

4.47.43pm GMT Mon 27th Oct 2003

Commenting on the Emergency Transport meeting being held tomorrow (Tuesday 28th October 2003) arranged by Mayor Livingstone, Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes MP called for inspections of inspectors to be brought in house.

Simon Hughes MP said:- "There must be the immediate introduction of 24-hour inspection regime in place on all lines. It must also be clear that the inspection responsibilities lie with Transport for London and not with Metronet or Tubelines."

"After months of buck-passing the Mayor must finally take up his responsibility for the Tube. It is essential that he grasps this opportunity to make safety and reliability his top priority."

"The Mayor and his TfL colleagues must ensure there is more invested into specialist ultra sound equipment so that the public can know that the ailing Tube infrastructure is not going to cost them their life."
