Hughes Welcomes The Norris Deputy Campaign Director To The Liberal Democrats

4.44.25pm GMT Fri 28th Nov 2003

Commenting on the decision of Edward Lord, the Deputy campaign Director for Conservative Mayoral candidate Steven Norris to join the Liberal Democrats, Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes said:- "I am delighted to welcome Edward Lord to the Liberal Democrats. It is clear that he feels the Conservatives under Michael Howard cannot represent the best interests of Londoners. The lack of tolerance, lack of inclusion and lack of libertarian values has disenchanted Edward and will turn off voters."

"The Liberal Democrats are clearly the real challengers to the outgoing Mayor, Ken Livingstone. After three and a half years as Mayor, Mr Livingstone is failing to deliver major improvements in transport and in the fight against crime, while creating the risk of huge problems in London's budget. He has let too many people down."

"Londoners are turning to the Liberal Democrats as the answer. We saw this in Brent, and we are now set to see this across all of London."
