London's Water Supply Under Threat12.00.00am GMT Sat 1st Nov 2003 Dee Doocey, Liberal Democrat South West London GLA candidate has slammed Thames Water for having the highest level of water leakage in the UK. Commenting on the report from the London Assembly's Public Services Committee Dee said "Thames Water keep banging on about how the public must conserve water whilst at the same time, allowing a level of leakage from their systems that would fill 300 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day. They then have the cheek to propose to charge consumers more money for improving the service. It almost beggars belief." "Since privatisation, the rest of the country has been gradually improving its water leakage figures while Thames Water's have actually worsened since 2000." In their annual report on water leakage, the water regulator Ofwat also criticised Thames Water for the increase in their water leakage levels, but we need action not words. Ofwat needs to get tough with Thames Water and demand higher investment to reduce water leakage.
