Plans For Police PFI Building

1.13.14pm GMT Fri 27th Feb 2004

The Metropolitan Police are embarking on a programme of developing and rebuilding their police stations, including Twickenham. The programme announced by the Met will use PFI (Private Finance Initiative).

Vincent Cable, MP, said he strongly supported the moves to redevelop the police estate: "the borough's police HQ in Twickenham is not a suitable building. It is appalling that members of the public have to stand in a corridor, queuing to speak to an officer, or that arrests cannot be made because of inadequate custody facilities. I know that the local police have wanted to move out and into more appropriate accommodation. I support them; the current steps to increase police numbers and beat policing need to be backed up by measures to make the police more efficient and better equipped".

"I have written to the Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority to seek confirmation that our borough is high in the queue".
