MP Promotes Energy Efficiency

2.24.38pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 4th May 2004

The Sustainable Energy Partnership, a broad coalition of business, trade, social and environmental organisations, have today welcomed Dr Jenny Tonge MPs commitment to back a firm target for energy efficiency.

Dr Jenny Tonge MP, "I was particularly keen to back EDM 96 calling on the Government to set a firm target for energy efficiency which will support national targets for reducing dangerous carbon dioxide emissions and help prevent cold related deaths in the winter. It is vital that the Government should set as the energy efficiency aim the achievement of five mega-tonnes of carbon savings a year by 2010 for the UK, with an appropriate proportion for England."

Susan Kramer PPC, "Jenny Tonge's support for this campaign is commendable. Saving energy will not only help cut fuel bills, but will also help reduce harmful green house gas emissions and preventing cold related deaths."

Commenting on Dr Tonge's support, Andrew Warren of the Sustainable Energy Partnership added, "Jenny Tonge MP is to be congratulated for this public support for energy efficiency. More and more MPs agree that the Energy Efficiency Aim should enshrine the UK commitment to saving five mega-tonnes of carbon savings per annum by 2010 for the UK energy efficiency."
