Code of Conduct for Pubs

Vincent Cable welcomed the launch of the Code of Conduct for Twickenham pubs launched today at the Cabbage Patch.

Vincent Cable drafted the code (together with Riverside ward councillor Denise Carr) several months ago after meetings with residents groups and publicans concerned over anti-social behaviour in the borough's town centres. He said he was "delighted that the leading publicans, the police and the council had taken the initiative forward".

"There is a recognition by the more socially responsible publicans that they have to get their house in order. Most of the traditional 'locals' cause absolutely no trouble but there are several notorious trouble spots. The code will bind publicans not to offer cheap, discounted, drinks, which encourage binge drinking; they will co-operate to exclude known trouble makers; and undertake to respect residents' concerns over late night noise".

Vincent Cable added that: "while a voluntary code is welcome there have to be sanctions too. The publicans know that unless the position improves, their licenses will be at risk and the police will act against disorderly premises".
