Bid to Help Local Sufferers from Parkinson's and MS

5.01.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 12th Oct 2004

The local NHS Primary Care Trust is launching a bid for funding for specialist nursing for residents with long term neurological conditions like Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

Vincent Cable, MP, who has been pressing for such specialist nursing on behalf of local support groups said that he was very pleased to see the initiative being taken. The local PCT is putting together a programme with the Multiple Sclerosis Society to provide specialist physiotherapy for housebound MS sufferers. And it is collaborating with Hounslow to recruit a Parkinson's Disease nurse.

Vincent Cable said: "there are many local people with these long term conditions, and even more debilitating diseases like Motor Neurone Disease, who cannot at present get specialist services to help them be mobile and who consequently become highly dependent. I want the NHS to become much more imaginative in dealing with these issues".
