Council guides residents through the benefits maze

7.58.19pm GMT Fri 16th Feb 2007

Disabled residents can now get face-to-face advice when applying for benefits.

Richmond Council, in partnership with Richmond AID is piloting a disability benefits service to ensure residents receive all the money they are entitled to. As well as giving advice on eligibility for benefits, trained officers provide practical help filling out forms, ensuring individuals and families maximise their income.

Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, said:

"Many people in the borough rely on benefits to live independently in their own homes. However, the benefits system is complicated and it can be difficult to work out what and how you can claim. Residents could be put off by the number of forms to be completed. If people don't fill in the applications correctly, they may be receiving less than they should. This new programme is designed to help. Officers are currently being trained in all aspects of the disability benefits system and can offer help and advice to make sure people claim the full amount they are due. This practical help can make a huge difference to the quality of life of so many families and individuals, and I urge any residents that need help to contact Richmond AID to find out more. "
