Council supports reusable nappy campaign

6.37.10pm GMT Wed 7th Mar 2007

Parents are being urged to switch to reusable nappies and cut household waste in a national campaign supported by Richmond Council.

During Real Nappy Week, March 11 to 18, an information display in the Civic Centre in Twickenham will promote both their environmental and financial benefits - reusable nappies can help parents save up to £500 a year. Council officers will also staff the display to answer questions and offer information.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:

"While the borough has one of the highest recycling rates in the capital, we are also reminding residents of the importance of cutting the amount of waste we produce. Disposable nappies currently make up four per cent of the borough's household waste sent to landfill. This amounts to 2,200 tonnes of waste - equivalent to 275 double decker buses - which will cost more than £100,000 a year to dispose of when new government landfill taxes come into force. By choosing reusable nappies, parents will help reduce the borough's waste mountain and by helping to meet government targets, save taxpayers' money."
