Challenging scenarios prepare young for life's perils4.53.39pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 20th Apr 2007
Hundreds of primary school pupils will be put through their paces in a challenging series of safety awareness scenarios run by Richmond Council. The 10 and 11-year-olds will take part in the annual Junior Citizen Scheme at Holly Lodge in Richmond Park from 23 April to 4 May, which aims to prepare them for the dangers they may encounter in life. They will face a range of scary, mock scenarios including road accidents, house fires, mugging and bullying, and forced to make decisions on their safety and that of others. By learning how to spot and avoid dangers, provide first-aid and make emergency calls, the youngsters are encouraged to become safe and responsible citizens. The scheme is run by the Council's Safety Education Team in partnership with the police, fire brigade and ambulance service. Transport for London, The Royal Parks Agency, the Port of London Authority and utility providers are also closely involved. Cllr David Trigg, Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, said: "This excellent scheme gives young people a real taste of some very challenging and stressful situations, which we hope they will never have to face in real life. But if they do, they will be armed with all the relevant knowledge that could save their lives and protect the lives of others. All the young people involved will soon be moving to secondary school and becoming more independent, so it's timely to teach them the importance of responsible citizenship and how to deal with difficult situations. I hope all of those involved enjoy the sessions and learn how to avoid or tackle the perils they might face in later life."
