Consultation launched on controlled drinking zones

1.32.40pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 4th May 2007

Plans for controlled drinking zones (CDZs) in Richmond and Twickenham town centres will be the subject of public consultation being launched by Richmond Council on Friday, May 4.

The proposed new zones would give the police discretionary powers to require people to stop drinking alcohol and/or confiscate it in the event of anti-social behaviour. It would be the first time such powers would be in force in the borough, and the consultation will last until Friday June 1. Cabinet Member for Communities, Sir David Williams, said:

"We want everyone to enjoy themselves in our town centres without their fun being spoilt by a few people who behave anti-socially. These are not alcohol-free zones but, instead, would give the police the power to stop people from drinking alcohol and/or confiscate it from anyone causing trouble. If they don't surrender it or stop drinking when told to do so by a police officer in a CDZ they risk a fine of up to £500. We are very keen to hear the views of the public before any final decisions are reached."
