Young people who secured employment through a Richmond Council-led scheme joined tutors, mentors and employers at a celebration event at the Sheen Lane Centre yesterday (Wednesday, 9 May).

They all completed the Into Work programme which helps 16 to 24 year olds who aren't in mainstream education find jobs or apprenticeships. The programme is run by the Council's Way to Work team in partnership with local employers and key agencies, and those helped include care leavers, people referred from the Youth Offending Team and those with disabilities or health problems. Over 16 years the Way to Work team has forged strong links with local businesses and agencies including Connexions and the Learning and Skills Council to create job opportunities for young people.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services, said:

"Deciding on a career and looking for work is a daunting prospect for any young person leaving education. That's why the Into Work programme is so important, providing much-needed advice, support and work experience for young people who, for a variety of reasons, did not excel in mainstream education. Congratulations to all those who have completed the programme and I wish them every success in their careers."
