Teddington bar hit by £1,290 fly-tipping penalty8.37.36pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 11th May 2007 A new warning about fly-tipping has been issued after a Teddington bar was hit by £1,290 in fines and costs for litter offences in a prosecution brought by Richmond Council. The Kou Kou Bar in Broad Street received £450 in fines with £840 costs for offences under the 1990 Environmental Protection Act. Richmond Magistrates Court heard last week that the business unlawfully dumped bags of commercial waste in the street. The business was warned by the Council and given the opportunity to pay £80 fixed penalty notices rather than face prosecution. The offers were rejected. So far this year, 11 fixed penalty notices have been paid by local businesses for failing to manage their waste properly. Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn, said: "We are determined to ensure the borough's streets are kept as tidy and litter-free as possible and we'll take firm action if the rules are flouted. Managing commercial waste properly is vitally important as fly-tipping leads to real eyesores. We take this matter very seriously and I hope the prosecution spells out this message loud and clear."
