Controlled Drinking Zones [CDZs] to be launched this week

2.12.37pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th Jun 2007

New Controlled Drinking Zones, aimed at keeping Richmond and Twickenham town centres enjoyable for all, will come into force from Friday, June 29.

The CDZs will give police the power to require people to stop drinking alcohol and/or surrender their drink in the event of anti-social behaviour. If people refuse they risk a fine of up to £500. It's the first time CDZs have been used in the borough. The launch follows public consultation. Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Communities, Sir David Williams, explained that the CDZs were not alcohol-free zones. He said:

"This is emphatically not an alcohol ban but a discretionary power for the police to use to tackle anti-social behaviour. They would have the power to stop troublemakers from drinking alcohol and to confiscate the drink if necessary. We want everyone to enjoy themselves in our town centres without their fun being spoilt by the behaviour of a few. CDZs are a means of helping us to ensure this happens."
