6.37.27pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 5th Sep 2007

The achievements of children and young people looked after by Richmond Council were celebrated at a ceremony in Twickenham on Monday, 3 September.

Foster carers, teachers and parents joined the young people at Orleans House Gallery where the Deputy Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Helen Lee-Parsons, awarded prizes to youngsters singled out for exceptional achievement. Awards include exceptional performance in GCSEs, commitment to education, performance in arts, music and sports, work experience and achievement of special awards and certificates. Young people leaving care will also pick up prizes for success in further education and employment.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education on Richmond Council, said: "Many of the children and young people we look after have had a challenging start in life but have tackled their problems with application and great determination. Their successes are an inspiration and this event is a good opportunity to recognise their achievements. I congratulate all the young people involved and wish them even greater success in the future."
