Council collects 25 million cans!8.39.26pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 21st Sep 2007
25 million cans! That's the stunning recycling achievement recognised in a special award to Richmond Council. The accolade has been won by the authority for its efforts in collecting aluminium drink cans for recycling over many years. Since 1994 the Council has collected 384 tonnes - that's 25 million cans! The success was saluted by Novelis, the aluminium can reprocessors. They have presented a trophy to the Council in recognition of its "valued and longstanding commitment to the supply of used aluminium drink cans for recycling." Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn, said: "This is great news for the borough and shows that this authority takes its recycling responsibilities very seriously. Also, well done to residents for putting all those cans out for recycling. Recycling helps combat climate change by saving energy and raw materials; this is particularly true of aluminium. Our aim is to make recycling as easy as possible for local people. Cans and foil can be recycled by using one of the many bring banks across the borough, or by putting them in the black box, which is collected from home."
