Cameras whirl for Scientific Edge2.23.38pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 22nd Sep 2007 Lights, camera, action - the search is on for budding young directors to enter a moviemaking competition, part of the Scientific Edge programme. Pupils from the borough's schools are invited to create and submit short films showcasing an aspect of science for a festival and an Oscars-style ceremony taking place in December. The competition is the latest instalment in the Scientific Edge project, which sees Richmond Council working together with schools and partner organisations to fire young people's enthusiasm for science. Entrants to the Schools Science Film Competition will be invited to a film-making workshop to learn the tricks of the trade before creating their entries for the film festival which takes place on December 6. Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education on Richmond Council, said: "The film competition offers an exciting medium to develop young people's knowledge of science and also to learn about the moviemaking process. The world of Science can provide a fun and stimulating environment in which young minds can search for answers and learn more about how the world works. This project links the discipline required in film making to that needed in the study of science. Our Scientific Edge programme aims to promote and enhance how science is taught in our schools, by providing pupils with the opportunity to experience exciting and practical examples to complement their academic studies.
