"In Town" days a huge success5.49.24pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 30th Sep 2007 A resounding success - that was the verdict on the two special events run by Richmond Council to promote environmentally-friendly forms of travel. The days, dubbed "In Town Without My Car", were staged on successive Saturdays, the first in Teddington, and the most recent at Richmond Green last weekend. Many hundreds of residents made a beeline for the events. And many of the visitors to Richmond Green on Saturday vowed to use sustainable transport in the future. Nearly 200 people signed a special pledge card to walk, cycle or use public transport. Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, Cllr David Trigg, said: "This was the second year the "In Town Without My Car" initiative has been held and yet again it was a huge success. This year it was even bigger and better than last time. These were fun events with attractions for children and families - but with a serious underlying theme, to promote sustainable transport, such as walking, cycling and public transport. These are not only better for your health, but better for the environment too. And I am greatly encouraged at the number of people who showed their commitment to sustainable travel by signing the special pledge card. Over 10,000 people throughout the capital have already signed up and I am delighted that many local people have now added their names."
