Young people cycling to make amends5.31.09pm GMT Fri 7th Dec 2007 A project for young people to repair and sell on bicycles and raise funds for a vital local cause has been relaunched by Richmond Youth Offending Team. Six young people either involved in the Youth Court reparation programme or identified as at risk of offending will take part in a six-week course at the Strathmore Centre in Teddington. They will service and repair bikes as part of their rehabilitation and use the course to contribute towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards or to gain accredited qualifications. The bikes will be made available to the public in return for a donation to the Shooting Star Children's Hospice. Cllr John Coombs, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said: "For some young people anti-social behaviour can be the start of a criminal career. This excellent programme will give youngsters at risk of committing criminal offences a positive outlet to channel their energies and learn new skills. For young offenders it offers a valuable way to understand the effects of their actions and a chance to make amends. For example, youngsters will learn how to change tyres, replace chains and check brakes. And I am delighted their efforts will help raise funds for the Shooting Star Hospice."
