Final phase of Arcadia project receives Council backing

• THE final phase of a £5m project to enhance the historic view from Richmond Hill and transform the Thames landscape between Kew and Teddington has received the backing of Richmond Council.

The Cabinet last night (10 March) endorsed the third and final stage of the London's Arcadia project, which has delivered major improvements to the borough's riverside over the past four years. It will begin in the coming weeks with a planting scheme and refurbishment of Riverdale Gardens in Richmond. Other proposed works include creating a sand martin bank on Eel Pie Island, subject to planning approval, and improvements in Radnor Gardens. New lighting along Warren footpath, running from Orleans House Gallery to Richmond Bridge, aims to improve visibility for people while protecting wildlife, especially bats. Footpath improvements and a new boardwalk are proposed along the Douglas footpath in Petersham, subject to Transport for London funding. Completion of the Ham Avenues restoration and improvements to Twickenham Embankment are also planned. All works would be subject to public consultation.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said: "London's Arcadia is a great example of what can be achieved in partnership. The Council has worked closely with the Thames Landscape Strategy, the National Trust, English Heritage and the Environment Agency, to deliver major improvements along large swathes of the river in Richmond upon Thames. It has been made possible through a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, by outstanding efforts to raise matched funding - the pledged total of almost £2.2m has smashed the initial £1.3m target - and the sterling work of volunteers who have donated the equivalent of £900,000 in time and energy. Subject to public consultation, this final phase of work will enhance even more of our riverside, safeguarding the view from Richmond Hill, ensuring our river banks remain a safe and attractive place for residents and visitors, and protecting biodiversity."
