VINCE Cable writes: "The next two years are going to be absolutely crucial - we've got local elections, European elections and a general election to fight.

The President of the party is a key individual in all of that, because it's the President that makes the link between the party and the parliamentarians. Whoever it is will have an absolutely key role in the election campaign as a spokesman for the party - and its absolutely vital that we have somebody in that role who has judgement and has experience. Ros has both.

She has substantial public and private sector experience. She has run a council with a budget of £650 million. She is well known at all levels of the party as a very effective campaigner, but also as a very effective parliamentarian and I very much look forward to working with her and regard her as an absolutely essential piece of the team that we'll be putting together over in next two years."
