The proposed River Centre

• THIS page links to: over 30 stories on this topic on this website going back to July 2002; the River Centre site; and the relevant pages on the Council website.

The River Centre website includes a reliable and comprehensive history going back to 1981 [when the swimming pool was closed 'for repairs' by the then Conservative-run Council. The page 'The history of the Twickenham Riverside site [Oct 09]' below covers the whole period from 1923/4 when the site was acquired by Twickenham Council to enable the widening of King Street to support the commercial growth of the town and to house expanded civic buildings.

From the Council website:

'• The scheme: The Council's aim is to create a well designed, sustainable scheme that enhances the riverside and boosts the viability of Twickenham town centre. New open space will form the largest component of the scheme and include a new, permanent children's play area. There will be a new River Centre managed by the Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames. Some private housing at the rear of the site will provide the funding for the community facilities and improving the embankment area in front of the site.

Twickenham Riverside has been a contentious issue for many years and the Council is now determined to bring the years of dereliction to an end and to take forward this new scheme with its significant community benefits secured at no capital cost to local taxpayers.'
